South America’s second crop corn yields decline
An analyst says second crop corn yields are disappointing as harvest continues in South America.
“Soybeans did better in South America this year than the corn.”
Michael Cordonnier with Corn and Soybean Advisor tells Brownfield Brazil’s second corn crop had good yields in some areas, but disappointing in others.
“Less than last year for sure, due to dry weather that started in April and it’s been dry since.”
Cordonnier says Argentina has about one-third of the crop left to harvest and corn leaf hoppers affected corn early.
“Nationwide, corn yield has been coming down every week for about the last six weeks. Nationwide, the corn yield in Argentina is at 107 bushels/acre. The best corn has already been harvested and I expect corn yield to keep coming down.”
Cordonnier says despite the smaller than expected second corn crop, South America will stay competitive globally. He says Brazil has a weaker currency and China prefers South America’s crops.
CONAB, Brazil’s equivalent of the USDA, will release its next crop production projection on Thursday.
