Original Story (Posted: July 30, 2024):
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A massive sinkhole shuts down a busy area outside of Uptown Charlotte until further notice.
Crews spent Tuesday working on the corner of South Cedar and West Morehead where a fence lines the collapsed concrete.
“You don’t really notice until it happens, you know?,” “Zach Ferrini, who works in the area said. “I know it’s pretty common in other places around the world, so it’s pretty wild to see it happen right down the street from here.”
Officials from Charlotte Water say a water main break developed into the sinkhole. No one was injured. People who live in the area say they’ve noticed more flooding recently.
“Flooding is pretty common here. We all have to move our cars and everything,” “Kendyl Bradley, who lives in the area said. “So we’re used to that and that happened [Monday] and then [Tuesday] morning we woke up with that [sinkhole].”
While crews continue working to repair the damage and reopen the road some people in the area are dealing with loss of water pressure and forced to take detours.
A spokesman for the city of Charlotte says CDOT is putting an emergency closure into the interactive closure map so that WAZE and other GPS systems can help motorists navigate around the work at Cedar and Morehead.
Charlotte Water officials did not give a timeline for when the work could be completed.
