Springfield is home of North America’s Paperboard Packaging Competition

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Judging of the North American Paperboard Packaging Competition is underway this week. This packaging competition is the premier competition for carton manufacturers across North America and takes place right here in downtown Springfield.

Public Enemy coming to The Big E

The Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) is a trade organization that aims to promote paperboard’s sustainability story through working with carton manufacturers. Represented by the Markens Group, this $10 billion company is headquartered here in Springfield. Packaging professionals, industry experts, and professors gathered at PPC headquarters to judge 64 sustainable, innovative package designs on concept of design, converting, and customer experience.

“We have a host of judges from all around the world today to judge our folding carton submissions here and taking a look at all of the beautiful applications and manufacturing process to be able to name our award winners,” said Emily Leonczyk, Executive Vice President of Markens Group.

The PPC is celebrating eight decades of sustainable, innovative package design. For 80 years, this competition has helped promote and protect the paper boarding industry. Paperboard has replaced high volumes of plastic packaging and due to its recyclable nature proving to be key in blending modern designs with sustainability.

“We have all sorts of innovations here on the table in all sorts of categories. In beverages, and in cosmetics, and in food, and it’s really exciting for us. This is one time of the year, it’s like the Oscars of our industry where people come to town and we judge and find the best box there can be,” said Ben Markens, President of Markens Group and Paperboard Packaging Council.

While showcasing paperboard’s advancement and versatility, the PPC hopes to pave the way for a more sustainable, creative, cutting-edge future of packaging.

The winner of this year’s competition will be announced October 1 at a company wide event in Atlanta.
