While the North American ski season is all but over, with Arapahoe Basin closing last weekend, things are just ramping up south of the equator. Winter has come early and enthusiastically to the Chilean Andes, with ski areas reporting over 10 feet of snow since many of the resorts opened earlier than scheduled for the 2024 ski season.

Valle Nevado, which opened three weeks early on May 31, enjoyed the spoils of a massive storm that left almost six feet of snow in its wake last week. Another storm blew in earlier this week, dropping another two feet on the slopes. The season snow total is up to 130 inches; the resort’s average annual snowfall is 240. The mountain is reporting seven of 12 chairlifts spinning, with more trails and lifts opening daily.

All of this is to say that if you’ve been considering a South America ski trip, it’s looking like conditions will be ideal this summer. The ski season runs from June to October, and many of Chile’s best ski areas are accessible from the city of Santiago via shuttle. And while daily lift tickets in South America aren’t nearly as pricey as in the U.S., Valle Nevado, and the connected resort of La Parva, are accessed via the Power Pass. Valle Nevado is also on the Ikon Pass and the Mountain Collective for the 2024 ski season.

With conditions this good, this early in the season, it just might be time to check this one off your bucket list.
