THE Trinidad and Tobago team was swept when the North/Central America and the Caribbean pre-qualifying tournament for the Junior Davis Cup continued on Monday in Guatemala.
Although they defeated Bermuda 2-1 to begin the competition on Sunday, the Under-16 tennis players were not expected to finish in the top two in Group C yesterday and reach the quarter-finals after failing to win a set in their 3-0 defeat by Honduras.
T&T needed to win their final round-robin fixture to qualify, but their opponents were the Panamanians, who took down both Honduras and Bermuda 2-1 during the first two days.
Jovan Garibana and last year’s national Under-14 champion Nirav Doudgeen both won their singles matches against Bermuda, but they were beaten 6-2, 6-3 and 7-5, 6-2, respectively, in Monday’s fixture against Honduras. The latter and debutant Connor Carrington were then whipped 6-4, 6-1 in the doubles match.
After defeating the T&T trio of Madison Khan, US-based Em-Miryam Campbell-Smith and Natalia Tkachenko– an American with local roots– 2-1 on Sunday, El Salvador went down by the same margin when they faced Honduras on Monday in the female equivalent competition. This country’s Junior Billie Jean Cup trio needed to upset the Hondurans when the round-robin stage ended yesterday to have any chance of reaching the quarters from Group C.
When the tournament concludes on Saturday, the winning male and female outfits will qualify to battle the teams from Mexico, United States and hosts Canada in the qualifying tournament in the middle of April.
