Several religious leaders yesterday expressed support for US President Donald Trump’s move to recognise only two genders : male and female.
In his inauguration speech after being sworn in as America’s 47th president in Washington yesterday, Trump said: “This week, I will also end the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life. We will forge a society that is colour-blind and merit-based. As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female. This week I will reinstate any service members who were unjustly expelled from the military for objecting to the Covid vaccine mandate with full backpay.”
In a phone interview yesterday, Laventille-based Redemption Christian Centre’s Bishop Dr Victor Gill, said: “I agree with Trump 100%. There are only two genders, just as the Bible states. We were experiencing a departure from the Judaeo-Christian world view to a more secular world view. The danger is it’s left to anyone’s opinion what morality should be.
“Trump returned to the Judaeo-Christian world and the Bible and its standards for morality and life. I am in total agreement. I think the world will be a much better place. It will impact Trinidad and Tobago.”
Gill added that “it’s a very great thing that Trump has done by making that statement and it’s based on the Bible. He is espousing the truth. Not a progressive ideology, but absolute truth. This is the Judaeo- Christian world view. Morality is based on the word of God. And not subjective human reasoning.”
According to Gill, “Trinidad and Tobago should never go the way of multiple genders. This approach has been surreptitiously introduced into our schools. This pressure was placed on us from Barack Obama and Joe Biden administrations. Trinidad and Tobago should make an about-turn. The Bible says ‘Righteousness (Proverbs 14:34) exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.’ It’s because we have forsaken Almighty God that all these things are coming on the nation, like crime. It’s not the only problem, but it’s one of the country’s problems.”
Also speaking by phone from Scarborough, Tobago, Inter-Religious Organisation (IRO) president Dr Ellis Burris, who is a practising Baha’I, said: “Two genders were made by God (Creation story in Genesis). I don’t believe in evolution. I will stay with the Bible. We will pray for those who have gone ‘contrary.’ The others (genders) were made up by man and have gone contrary to God’s word. The Lord’s word is not to be compromised. Somebody has to bring order to it. That’s what Trump is probably hoping to achieve. I don’t get into the politics here or abroad. I am sure other religious leaders would agree with it.”
He added: “Although you are on the pulpits preaching the word of God, people would remember how made them feel. Don’t embarrass people because of their sexuality. Even if you don’t agree, you have to deal with people with integrity. People can get a little ‘out of hand.’ It’s how you remind them about God’s word.”
Pundit Mukram Sirjoo of Trinidad Academy Of Hinduism said he agreed with Trump. “He is not allowing it; especially in the sporting world. I totally agree with it. If we don’t nip it in the bud, the human race would be affected. It would be like in the Bible story-Sodom and Gomorrah.”
