ASMA CHARLES and Kristianna Richards exacted revenge for seventh place as they finished one spot ahead of Trinidad and Tobago compatriots Stephen Enile and Joel Theodore when the seventh leg of the NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) Beach Volleyball Tour concluded yesterday in Bonaire.
After being brushed aside 21-9, 21-14 by Del Padmore and Serena Charles in their opening match of the tournament on Friday, the debutants bounced back after being two points from defeat in the second set to stun the Barbadians 13-21, 22-20, 15-10 in a marathon 48-minute seventh-place playoff.
Charles and Richards were crushed 21-3, 21-3 by Americans Carly Kan and Devanne Sours in Saturday night’s quarter-finals, and then, after coming within two points of victory in the second set, they were eventually edged 15-21, 21-19, 15-11 by Curacao’s Dyveke Brugman and Lakisha Hous in their first match in the fifth-eighth playoff series.
After winning two of their three matches in the round-robin stage to finish second in Group A, Enile and Theodore lost their last three to end up in eighth position.
The last-placed finishers in the previous – in Mexico in June – leg were whipped 21-15, 21-9 by Americans Charles Siragusa and John Schwengel in the quarters, and then beaten 21-13, 21-13 by Guatemalans Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia in their first match in the fifth-eighth playoff series on Saturday night.
William Clements and Garrett Bucklin of the United States Virgin Islands scored a convincing 21-6, 21-15 triumph in the seventh-place playoff against Theodore and Enile, who also lost at this stage of the final leg of last year’s circuit.
The three-day tournament was the first one for the T&T men since they lost both matches in a competition in Volleyball World Beach Professional Tour in Turkey about a month ago.
