Recently, I watched an episode of America’s Got Talent (AGT), something I do from time to time. However, this one in particular was different. That night, I was introduced to Richard Goodall.
Goodall, a humble janitor from Indiana, USA, captured the hearts of many when he belted out an unexpected performance of “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. It wasn’t just his voice that resonated, but the message of the song he chose: one of unwavering hope, even in the darkest times. The admonition is a testament that no matter where you start in life or what role you may play, you have the power to shine. Goodall wasn’t looking for fame; he was simply expressing a part of himself, reminding all of us that we carry greatness within.
In life, we often encounter moments that test our strength, our resolve and our faith in ourselves. Goodall’s story is one such example—a story of resilience, passion and never giving up, no matter how tough the road ahead may seem. I decided that day to follow Goodall and see where he would reach on the show.
I couldn’t help but reflect on my own life’s journey—the many ups and downs, the numerous failures and letdowns, the sacrifices and betrayals. It felt as though Goodall was speaking to me directly. I yearned to hear more from this unassuming individual. We are the same age, in different parts of the world; we don’t know each other, but he was preaching as though he knew me and he was intimate with my story.
The next time I saw Goodall, he was in the semi-finals of AGT; he was singing “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. My experience mirrors the message of “Eye of the Tiger”. Life often feels like a battle. The tiger symbolises a fighter who refuses to back down despite overwhelming odds.
These songs remind us of something crucial: you are more than your circumstances. In Trinidad and Tobago, where the challenges we face can feel insurmountable—whether it’s the rampant crime, disillusionment with politics or the sense of hopelessness that may creep in—it’s easy to feel like giving up. But Goodall demonstrated to us that even when the world feels bleak, we can ignite our inner fire, hold on to hope and keep moving forward.
In our sweet Trinidad and Tobago, many persons may feel weighed down by the realities of our country—the violence, the injustice, the lack of opportunities. It’s hard to dream when everything around you seems broken. But that’s exactly when you must dig deeper and believe in yourself more fiercely. Your circumstances do not define you. Like Goodall, you have a voice, a talent and a purpose that only you can bring to the world. It may not be easy, and you will face setbacks, but that is part of the process.
The world will try to tell you that you’re not enough. That the odds are against you. That you’re just another statistic. But here’s the truth: you are powerful beyond measure. You have the capacity to rise above the noise, the crime and the negativity that surrounds you. No one can take your potential away from you unless you let them.
Now, I want you to think about these lyrics from “Don’t Stop Believing”:
“Don’t stop believing / Hold on to that feeling.”
That “feeling” is the spark inside of you, the hope that no matter how dark things may seem, there is always a light. It’s the belief that you have what it takes to make a difference—not only in your life but in the lives of those around you. Trinidad and Tobago needs young leaders who believe in themselves and are committed to creating a brighter future.
Think of “Eye of the Tiger” as your personal anthem. It’s about keeping your focus and facing life with determination and courage.
When life knocks you down—and it will—you must get back up, stronger, sharper and more resilient. Don’t let your environment determine your future. You have the power to change your story, just like Goodall did. Keep fighting for your dreams, keep your eyes on the goal, and never give up.
There’s a line in “Eye of the Tiger” that goes:
“Rising up, back on the street / Did my time, took my chances.”
This is your moment to rise up. You are not defined by the hardships you face but by how you choose to respond to them. Every citizen has a tiger within—ready to fight, ready to rise. Even when it feels like the world is against you, remember that you have the strength to overcome.
