The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is a North American country known for its African and Indian cultures. It is the southernmost island country in the Caribbean and the home of music styles music styles such as calypso, rapso, parang, soca, chutney and chutney soca.
Bhadase Sagan Maraj formed the People’s Democratic Party in 1953 and Eric Williams formed the People’s National Movement. The two merged into the Democratic Labour Party in 1957.
On August 31, 1962, Trinidad and Tobago gained its independence from the United Kingdom. Paula-Mae Weekes assumed office as the sixth president of the Caribbean country, making her its first female president.
Trinidad and Tobago is the home of Miss Universe 1977 Janelle Commisiong, Miss World 1986 Giselle Laronde and Miss Universe 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam. Among the top tourist spots of the country are the Aripo Caves, the Maracas Beach and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary.
