JOEL THEODORE and Stephen Enile failed to advance to the knockout stage of their first tournament on the Volleyball World Beach Professional Tour, in Balikesir, Turkey, on Saturday.
After losing their first match in the futures tournament—the lowest level of professional competition in the sport—21-13, 21-11 to the pair from Iran the day before, the Trinidad and Tobago players were whipped 21-12, 21-10 by a Turkish pair to conclude their campaign in Group B.
The Turks then nosed out a pair from Belgium 21-15, 14-21, 20-18 in the first round of the main draw, before being edged 21-18, 19-21, 15-12 by two Italians—who went on the capture the gold yesterday—in the quarter-finals.
The duo from Iran also went on reach the last eight, but they were then beaten 21-18, 21-14 by two brothers from Norway, after their 21-16, 16-21, 15-10 triumph over two players from Germany.
It turned out to be a very tough draw for Enile and Theodore as the other three teams from Group B made it to at least the quarter-finals.
After winning the group, Evan Aas and Jo Sunde of Norway received a bye in the first round of the main draw and then took down a pair from Ukraine 21-18, 21-9 on Saturday to reach the semi-finals.
However, they were edged in three sets yesterday and ended up with bronze by defeating their fellow Norwegians 21-17, 21-15. Italians earned both the gold and silver medals in the three-day tournament.
This was the first international tournament for Theodore and Enile since they finished 12th and last in a NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) event three months ago in Mexico.
That was their first competition in this circuit since they reached the quarters of the final stage of last year’s tour in Dominican Republic in November.
