MAKEDA BAIN and Josiah Hills are leading a six-member Under-14 Trinidad and Tobago team in the North/Central American and Caribbean pre-qualifying competition for the World Junior Tennis Tournament from today in the Dominican Republic.
The tournament, sanctioned by the both the Central America and the Caribbean Tennis Confederation (COTECC) and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) will be contested on a daily basis until Saturday.
The winning male and female outfits will move forward to tackle the teams from Mexico, United States and hosts Canada in the qualifying tournament in the middle of next month.
Bain, who began this year ranked No. 1 in COTECC, will be playing alongside fellow top-ten player Cyra Ramcharan (No. 8) and the 13th-ranked Cherdine Sylvester.
There are also two top-ten players on the boys’ team as Hills and Christopher Khan are listed at No. 4 and No. 7, respectively.
The 29th ranked Oliver Harrigan defeated Jaysean Wells and Novak Malcolm, ranked tenth and 12th respectively, in COTECC for the third place on the team in the trials two months ago.
Five of the six players performed better than creditably in a COTECC-sanctioned event in Guatemala a few weeks ago.
Hills and Khan reached the final of doubles and semi-finals of singles, while Harrigan made it the quarter-finals in singles, along with Sylvester, who also reached the last eight in doubles—alongside Ramcharan.
Bain was unavailable as she was on a touring team representing COTECC in tournaments in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Kino Francis is coaching the boys’ team this week, while Larry Yearwood, one of this country’s greatest ever players, will be in charge of the girls.
