U.S. dairy industry aligns with South American ag groups
The National Milk Producers Federation and U.S. Dairy Export Council are strengthening partnerships in South America to promote the removal of trade barriers.
Jaime Castaneda, an executive vice president of both organizations, tells Brownfield there’s a need globally for the dairy industry to work together on shared values.
“To have a more comprehensive conversation as we move forward to plan and strategize positions in different international forums, including the United Nations,” he explains.
The two groups recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Brazilian Association of Milk Producers, Abraleite, and renewed an agreement with Argentina’s largest farmer organization, Sociedad Rural Argentina.
He says the groups want international standards and guidelines based on science and balance to policies that could unfairly impact producers.
“We continue to work with the dairy industry in different countries,” he says. “Obviously sometimes you cannot control what governments do, but working with them internally we can actually try to join forces and push back.”
Castaneda says their organization has similar agreements with ag groups in Colombia, Chile, and Mexico.
