If Premier League managers are usually concerned when their big-name players fly out for international duty, that Darwin Nunez is now available for Uruguay for their upcoming fixtures will instead be welcomed by Liverpool head coach Arne Slot.

Nunez had initially been suspended for five games for his part in the Copa America chaos after Uruguay’s semi-final exit to Colombia in the United States in July. The Reds striker was one of several players to race into the stands after trouble broke out between the two sets of fans at full time in North Carolina’s Bank of America Stadium and was banned last month for his part in the unsavoury scenes.

It was reported on Friday night that Uruguay Football Federation have since successfully appealed the verdict through the Court of Arbitration for Sport, freeing up Nunez to take part in World Cup qualifiers with Peru and Ecuador this month. It’s a provisional appeal that could still see the former Benfica star miss the games, but he is with his national side in the belief that is cleared to play some part.

Slot said he had toyed with the idea of setting up a behind-closed-doors match to keep his non-international contingent fresh, which Nunez would have benefitted from.

Speaking on Friday, before the overturning of the ban was reported, the Liverpool boss revealed: “I would have preferred him to go because I think it is always good for a player to go to his national team, they like to see their team-mates again.

“He would have probably played two games, at least one but I think both because he is a starter over there and like you guys are telling me constantly, he hasn’t started that much over here. It would have been good for him to get some playing time there.

“Now we will try to find a way of finding playing time over here for him or training time. Ideally for me he would have gone over there. I don’t think it is a good thing for a player being suspended.

“It’s a good thing for a player to go and see his team-mates, get energy over there, get some playing time. We’re working on that (behind-closed-doors fixture).”
