MONTEVIDEO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — Boca Juniors forward Miguel Merentiel was among three uncapped players included in Uruguay’s squad on Tuesday for World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Venezuela.
Other newcomers on the 25-man list were River Plate full-back Agustin Sant’Anna and Estudiantes forward Tiago Palacios.
Meanwhile, Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa recalled Wolverhampton Wanderers central defender Santiago Bueno, Boca Juniors full-back Marcelo Saracchi and Vasco da Gama defender Jose Luis Rodriguez.
But the squad was noteworthy for the absence of several key names. Among those missing were Darwin Nunez, Ronald Araujo, Rodrigo Bentancur, Jose Maria Gimenez and Mathias Olivera, who are serving suspensions for their part in a melee with fans after Uruguay’s Copa America semifinal defeat to Colombia in July.
Uruguay will also be without Matias Vina, Giorgian de Arrascaeta, Federico Vinas and Nicolas de la Cruz due to injury.
The Celeste will host Paraguay at the Centenario stadium on Friday in what will be the final international appearance of Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer Luis Suarez. Bielsa’s men will then confront Venezuela in Maturin next Tuesday.
