Canada Make Successful Copa Debut
Canada’s first Copa America has been a success no matter what happens on Saturday. They lost 2-0 to Argentina in the Semifinal but have a chance to take third place if they can defeat Uruguay.
Uruguay fell 1-0 to ten-man Colombia on Wednesday and Uruguay’s players were involved in a brawl with Colombia fans after the match. If that leads to suspensions, the odds for this Canada vs Uruguay Copa America match may shift quite a bit. Regardless, we’ll take a look at the current odds and preview the match.
Canada vs Uruguay
Date & Time: Saturday, July 13th, 8:00 p.m. ET
Location: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC, USA
Canada vs Uruguay Head-to-Head
This will be the first-ever Canada vs Uruguay Copa America match. Canada and Uruguay have only met twice previously. In 2022, Uruguay won 2-0 in a friendly, as Darwin Nuñez and Nicolas de la Cruz got on the scoresheet. Uruguay also defeated Canada 3-1 in the 1986 Miami Cup.
Canada’s Finishing Letting Them Down
Canada put up a fight on Tuesday against Argentina but didn’t have enough offensive firepower to compete with the defending champions. Argentina scored in both halves in their 2-0 win. Canada had some chances but their finishing has been a major issue during Copa America, as they’ve scored just two goals in five matches.
In the seven matches coach Jesse Marsch has been in charge, Canada are 1-3-3. During that time, they’ve scored twice and conceded nine times. With some hard-nosed play Canada managed to finish in second place in the Group A Copa America standings with a win, loss and a draw.
Canada beat Venezuela in penalties in the Quarter-Final, following a 1-1 draw and overall their first Copa America appearance has been a success. If Marsch can iron out the kinks, Canada could become a major player, at least on the CONCACAF stage.
Alphonso Davies is Canada’s most talented player and the Bayern Munich left back sometimes lines up at left wing. However, his status is questionable for Saturday’s match. Winger Jacob Shaffelburg has been impressive thus far and striker Jonathan David scores goals for fun with Lille but has just one goal in Copa America. Canada are dangerous on counter attacks and perhaps playing without too much pressure on Sunday could help their finishing.
Uruguay Players Involved in Brawl
Uruguay have also struggled to convert their chances in recent matches. After finding the net eight times in their first two Copa America games, Uruguay have scored once in their last three. Darwin Nuñez had four shots in Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Colombia but didn’t put any of them on target. Legendary Uruguay striker Luis Suarez also hit the post after coming on as a sub.
The loss was particularly disappointing, given Uruguay played with a man advantage for more than a half. Uruguay also failed to score in the Quarter-Final against Brazil, but won in penalties. Earlier, Uruguay were in one of the more favorable Copa America groups, with USA, Panama and Bolivia and La Celeste won all three of those games.
Uruguay were one of the most popular dark horse soccer picks to win the tournament but they seemed to run out of gas as time went. Plus, center back Ronald Araujo got injured against Brazil and is out for the rest of the tournament. Nahitan Nandez will return from a suspension here but a bunch of Uruguayan players could miss this match.
After the Colombia match, Nuñez, Jose Gimenez, Maxi Araujo, Sebastian Caceres and others entered the stands and brawled with Colombia fans. The Uruguayan players claim it was because their family members were being harassed but we’ll see how CONMEBOL reacts.
Canada vs Uruguay Match Analysis & Odds
Third place games are usually wide open and over 2.5 goals are listed at -110 odds here. Even if Nuñez can’t play for Uruguay, they have the quality to be able to break down Canada and regain their goal scoring form. Suarez could get a rare start up front.
Meanwhile, Canada will continue to create chances but whether they can finish them is another story. Jonathan David scores plenty for Lille but he’s found the net just once in Copa America.
The Canada vs Uruguay Copa America odds currently price Canada as +635 underdogs for this match. Canada likely won’t show better value than right now, especially if any Uruguayan players receive suspensions.
Meanwhile, Uruguay come in at -195 odds and a draw sits at +290. If the match finishes level, it will go directly into penalties. Bettors can find Uruguay -1 at -118 odds, while Canada +1 comes in at -102.
