Club Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo dies a week after mid-match collapse

Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo, a defender for Club Nacional, passed away after collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match against Sao Paulo last week. The 27-year-old’s sudden collapse was due to an irregular heartbeat, marking a heartbreaking end to a match that has left the football community in shock.

Izquierdo fell to the ground in the 84th minute of the game without any contact, prompting immediate medical intervention. He was rushed to Hospital Albert Einstein in Brazil, where he received intensive care. Despite being placed on a ventilator and undergoing critical neurological treatment, Izquierdo’s condition deteriorated, ultimately resulting in a fatal cardiac arrest.

“It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that the Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo,” Club Nacional said in a statement.

“We express our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones. All of Nacional is in mourning for his irreparable loss,” Club Nacional added.

Before the incident, Sao Paulo players showed solidarity, wearing shirts in support of Izquierdo ahead of their league match, highlighting the camaraderie and respect that transcends the sport.

Juan Izquierdo’s career began with Cerro in 2018, and he quickly made a name for himself with stints at clubs like Peñarol, Montevideo Wanderers, and Liverpool. Returning to Nacional in 2024, Izquierdo played 23 matches, vying for a spot in the starting lineup against veteran defender Sebastián Coates.
