While most of the focus this summer is on the Euros, the Copa America also kicked off over the past week, and with Liverpool players involved for Uruguay, Argentina, and Colombia, Sunday saw Darwin Nuñez and Uruguay starting their tournament.
Taking on Panama in an expanded edition of the Copa that includes CONCACAF sides from both North and Central America, Uruguay in the end won 3-1 with Nuñez scoring what ended up being the winning second goal for Marcelo Bielsa’s La Celeste.
The story of the night for many, though, was less about Nuñez’ goal and more about his energy and his misses. Which is to say, the chaos he brings to the pitch that more often than not, when he keeps pushing on, leads to good things happening.
“It’s all good in the end when I can score goals,” he said post-match. “If I’m going to make five or 10 mistakes then I’m going to try 11 times. That’s what a striker has to do. Not be worried when he misses five, he has to keep trying and never give up.
“If he gives up nothing will work out. So it’s always important to start off with a win, and we all know that the first game of a tournament is always difficult, but we got the result here this time and so we are really happy and now try to grow from here.”
Next up for Uruguay is Bolivia on Thursday followed by the United States next Monday, with the top two sides from the group—widely expected to be Uruguay and the USA in Group C—then advancing to the knockout rounds as part of the final eight.
