How Uruguay's media reacted to Darwin Nunez's latest Copa America performance

Darwin Nunez got on the pitch for the third time in Uruguay’s Copa America campaign – where the team managed a contentious 1-0 victory against the United States.

The only scorer of the game in Kansas City was Mathias Olivera, but he seemed to be offside, causing a VAR check which later confirmed his goal. Uruguay came out on top with a hat-trick of triumphs in the tournament, which guaranteed them a spot in the quarterfinals while Panama came out as Group C’s runners-up.

Uruguay’s coach Marcelo Bielsa missed the game due to a suspension by American soccer’s governing bodies – CONMEBOL and CONCACAF – for the team’s late appearance during second half of the first two games. Remarkably, it was Nunez’s first match without scoring, following seven successive matches with his name on the scoreboard.

Owing to this, Liverpool.com decided to see how the Uruguayan media have reviewed Nunez’s performance…

In its player ratings, El Observador wrote: “He started demanding a lot from the rival centere-backs. Eight minutes in, he made a spectacular play in which he only made a mistake in the final pass to Maximiliano Araujo. In the 37th minute, he was close to scoring after a great play by Cristian Olivera. He committed a very hard foul before the break and received a yellow card.”

In its player ratings, El Pais wrote: “Powerful in speed, as in every Copa America match, despite at times, being alone in attack. His free-kick almost ended in a goal by Nicolas de la Cruz. He fought a lot in the second half, but he was unable to capitalise.”

And its player ratings, La Diaria Deporte wrote: “Always a beast. They all fought and Darwin didn’t have much fight left in him but contributed a lot on the pitch.”
