Liverpool Striker Darwin Nuñez and Uruguay Take Third Place Match in Copa America

While Uruguay – and the organizing/logistical set-up for the entire tournament – are under scrutiny given the way their semifinal match against Colombia ended. Liverpool striker and Uruguay forward Darwin Nuñez, in particular, has drawn quite the focus as cameras caught him prepared to launch a chair into a crowd during the fracas.

CONMEBOL, the governing body overseeing the tournament, noted that they would open deep investigations into what occurred but that the players and coaches would be allowed to participate in the following match. This meant that Darwin was able to feature for Uruguay in their third place match against Canada.

Darwin was named to Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI and played for 45 minutes in what would turn out to be a tight match. Jesse Marsch’s Canadian side managed to play La Celeste to a 2-2 draw, even taking the lead briefly late in the second half. Unfortunately, for the (Canadian) Reds, they weren’t able to suppress Luis Suarez, who nabbed the equalizer and forced the match into penalties. Uruguay managed to take seal the win when Canada and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies failed to convert their penalty.

Now, it’s vacation time for Darwin before rejoining Liverpool for pre-season work. It remains to be seen if any of his action at the tournament will cause him to miss game time in this upcoming Premier League season.
