OAS Secretary General Almagro highlights challenges to democracy in Latin America

Santo Domingo.- During the opening keynote at the “Democracy in Latin America” congress in Santo Domingo, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro addressed the challenges democracy faces in the region. He highlighted issues like judicial co-optation, election manipulation, and restrictions on freedom of expression, which have undermined democratic stability, especially affecting marginalized communities. Almagro emphasized the need for greater accountability, a clear separation of powers, and fair elections to strengthen democracy.

Almagro warned of organized crime’s influence on political systems, stating it leads to violence and institutional corruption. He stressed that democracy should ensure free expression and equal political participation, reminding leaders that democratic systems must transcend government failures. Citing high levels of journalist violence and social inequality, he urged a renewed commitment to democratic principles.

Almagro also discussed artificial intelligence (AI) as both a potential tool and threat for democracy, advocating for regulation to prevent misinformation and polarization. He emphasized the role of dialogue in resolving democratic issues, urging governments to address citizens’ needs through open communication. The congress, with experts from Uruguay, Spain, and the Dominican Republic, concludes this Friday.
