Uruguay could make unusual Manuel Ugarte decision for World Cup qualifier

Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte is back with his national team for the current break.

After the fanfare which greeted his arrival at Manchester United, and desperation after a disastrous Casemiro performance against Liverpool, Manuel Ugarte’s start at Old Trafford has been a little underwhelming.

Erik ten Hag was right that it would take Ugarte time to adjust, with it telling that the midfielder was not selected against Porto or Aston Villa.

For now, Ugarte is back in more familiar surroundings with the Uruguay national team.

According to South American outlets Direct TV Sports and El Pais, Manuel Ugarte is being considered for a centre-back role for Uruguay’s next match.

This is related to Uruguay’s selection issues at the position, with Ugarte viewed as a viable alternative.

It is one Bielsa has leaned on before. This past summer in the Copa America semi-final, Ugarte was selected as centre-back against Colombia

This was a game Uruguay lost, with Colombia winning the game 1-0, and Ugarte’s performance was not viewed as a particularly good one, with La Diaria noting it was a costly decision, with his presence in midfield was missed.

Nonetheless, Ugarte in defence is being considered once again by Uruguay, with Marcelo Bielsa not one to abandon his ideas based on a solitary result.
