Uruguay Greenlights Google Data Center Project

Uruguay’s Ministry of Environment greenlit Google’s plan to build a data center in the city of Canelones, just outside of Montevideo.

The data center will be built in four phases at the Science Park in Ciudad de la Costa. This will be Google’s second data center in Latin America, following its first facility in Santiago, Chile.

Originally announced in 2020, the project underwent major revisions in 2023 to address concerns about water usage and environmental impacts.

The updated proposal, submitted in 2023, scales down the initial plan from two data centers to one, reducing capacity by two-thirds. A key feature of the new design is the inclusion of an air-cooled chiller system, which eliminates water consumption and wastewater production.

The authorization will be void if Google delays construction by more than two years.

Uruguayan authorities stipulated that the data center should consume as little energy as possible, with UTE, the state-owned company, supplying electricity. The letter of approval specifies that the facility’s peak annual energy consumption must not exceed 560 GWh (gigawatt hours).

During the construction phase, the project will employ between 300 and 400 workers, peaking at around 800. Once operational, the data center will provide approximately 50 jobs.

It seems like Google chose Uruguay as a spot for its second data center due to the country’s low crime rate, a perk that made Chile attractive for its first facility.

Google has been setting up the ground for its South American data centers for a while. It recently built a submarine cable that runs through Uruguay, connecting the South Cone with the east coast of the US.
