Heavy rain 22 to 24 June caused flash floods, cutting roads and prompting evacuations in Uruguay. Strong winds have downed power lines leaving hundreds without electricity.
According to disaster authorities, Montevideo, Lavalleja, Colonia and Canelones were the worst affected departments.
Heavy rain fell between 22 and 24 June, with dozens of locations recording more than 65mm of rainfall in a 24 hour period. According to Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet), in 24 hours to 23 June the town of José Batlle y Ordóñez in Lavalleja Department recorded 105 mm of rain and San José de Carrasco in Canelones 88 mm. The following day Coronilla in Maldonado recorded 82.3 mm of rain and Minas in Lavalleja 75.0 mm.
Around 360 people evacuated their homes in Montevideo, where wind damage left 1,800 people without power after. Wind damage also affected parts of Lavalleja department.
Emergency services in Canelones responded to 44 calls for flooding. Roads were cut in El Colorado in Canelones and Picada Benítez in the department of Colonia on 23 June. Roads closures also affected parts of Durazno, Maldonado, Rocha, San José and Soriano the next day.
