US President Joe Biden on Monday congratulated Uruguay’s Yamandu Orsi for winning his country’s presidential election, after the left-winger swept to power a day earlier.
“As President-elect Orsi prepares to take office in March, I am confident our two countries will continue our work together to build more secure and prosperous futures for our people,” said Biden in a statement.
Orsi, of the Frente Amplio (Broad Front) alliance, beat Alvaro Delgado of the National Party, a member of outgoing President Luis Lacalle Pou’s center-right Republican Coalition.
Both candidates pledged to fight crime linked to drug trafficking and to boost economic growth, which is recovering from the slowdown brought by the Covid-19 pandemic and a historic drought.
Biden lauded Uruguay’s role in the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity (APEP), a US-led initiative meant in part to counter China’s influence in Latin America.
“Uruguay has been at the vanguard of promoting democracy in the Americas, as well as leading in the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity to invest in innovations that create opportunities for the middle class throughout the hemisphere,” he said.
Biden will be replaced in the White House in January by President-elect Donald Trump, who has promised to take on China economically, particularly through the use of tariffs.
He has also warned he would impose retaliatory tariffs on any countries that impose such levies on US imports.
US-Uruguay trade stood at around $3.8 billion in 2022, according to official US data, and the two countries have had formal relations for more than 150 years.
Uruguay imposes a Mercosur Common External Tariff (CET) on imports from non-member countries, with rates ranging between zero and 35 percent.
The United States imposes its own tariffs between zero and approximately 15 percent on imports from Uruguay.
