Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami are monitoring a system in the Atlantic Ocean that now has a higher chance of developing into at least a tropical depression. A second area to watch is also being monitored for development over the western Caribbean Sea.
The first system is Investment 94L, which is currently located in the Atlantic roughly midway between the Cabo Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles, forecasters said in a 1 p.m. CT update Monday. That system brought tropical storm-force winds and torrential precipitation to the archipelago on Friday.
The well-defined area of low pressure is producing limited showers and thunderstorms as it moves over an area that’s currently not conducive for development, forecasters said. However, that could change in the coming days.
“This system is forecast to move generally westward toward warmer waters, and environmental conditions could become more favorable for gradual development by the middle to latter part of this week,” the hurricane center wrote.
A tropical depression could form as the system approaches or moves near the Leeward Islands late this week, forecasters said.
As of now, the hurricane center is giving the system a medium 60% chance of developing over the next seven days. Those odds are higher than they were over the weekend, when forecasters were predicting only a 40% chance of development.
Regardless, if you have plans to travel to popular warm-weather destinations, like Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, you’ll want to keep an eye on the forecast. It’s too early to determine the track or intensity if something develops, forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Tampa said in a post to social media platform X.
If the system intensifies into a tropical storm, it will be the 14th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which started on June 1 and ends on Nov. 30. The next named storm for this hurricane season would be Nadine.
Tropical disturbance in western Caribbean Sea
In addition to Investment 94L, the hurricane center is keeping an eye on the southwestern Caribbean Sea where a broad area of low pressure is likely to form later this week.
Some development is possible thereafter if the system stays over water while it moves slowly toward northern Central America, forecasters said. Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is possible across portions of Central America later this week.
The hurricane center said the area to watch has a low 20% chance of development over the next seven days.
