Alicia Keys stumps for Kamala Harris in Pennsylvania
Former First Lady Michelle Obama and singer Alicia Keys campaigned for Kamala Harris in Norristown, Pennsylvania on Saturday. In her speech to the rally goers Keys told the audience about how important a vote can be and the dangers that a second Trump administration with its Project 2025 agenda would be for women’s rights.
“Our vote is a precious gift. It’s a gift that we give to each other. But that gift wasn’t just handed to us. A woman’s right to vote did not come easy. Suffragists organized for 70 years before the 19th Amendment was passed,” she said.
“By Congress by the way so we need to vote up and down the ballot,” she added.
“And it didn’t pass the first time… it took four tries to pass and just by two votes… But it’s the difference of a vote or two that can change the course of history. That’s inspiring to me.”
But that wasn’t the end of women’s struggle for freedom and equal rights she explained and that those acquired rights, including to vote, are in danger nowadays.
“They are already starting to take those rights away. If it’s been done already with Roe vs. Wade, what makes us think that there isn’t a leader in place, there couldn’t be a leader in place from the other side,” who would be willing to take women’s rights away.
“This not some dystopian Netflix that I’m talking about. This is like the platform the other side is running on. They want to turn back the clock,” she told the crowd. “They trying to take us back, they trying to take our safety away, they’re trying to take our dignity away, they are even trying to take our right to vote, it’s on the table.”
“Last week an ally of Kamala’s opponent, because honestly his name doesn’t deserve to be spoken out loud. One of these Project 2025 people put out a video, and you know what he said? When we said we wanted mail only voting we meant M-A-L-E. And then he said the 19th might have to go.”
