Alabama football will not play for a national championship.

The Crimson Tide was the first team out of the first 12-team CFP, being ranked as No. 11 behind SMU. Alabama did not play for an SEC championship after losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

But Alabama’s season is not done.

Alabama will play Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida, to finish the 2024 season at 11 a.m. CT Dec. 31 on ESPN.

Here’s what we know about Alabama’s history in the ReliaQuest Bowl and against Michigan.

Alabama football ReliaQuest Bowl history

While the game was called something different, Alabama has played in a version of the ReliaQuest Bowl twice before. 

The Crimson Tide ended the 1987 season in the Hall of Fame Bowl against Michigan, falling to the Wolverines 28-24. 

Alabama then ended the 1996 season with a 17-14 win against Michigan in the Outback Bowl.

Alabama and Michigan have faced off six times in college football history.

The most recent meeting between the Wolverines and the Crimson Tide was for a spot in the CFP national championship last season. Michigan beat Alabama 27-20 in the Rose Bowl.

Alabama lost its CFP semifinal matchup at the Rose Bowl 27-20 to Michigan on Jan. 1, 2024.

Where did Alabama football play its bowl game in Nick Saban’s first season?

Alabama finished its first season under head coach Nick Saban with a 30-24 win against Colorado in the Independence Bowl. The Crimson Tide’s six-point win ended a four-game regular-season losing streak where Alabama lost to LSU, Mississippi State, Louisiana Monroe and Auburn, each by seven points or fewer.

Kalen DeBoer bowl history

As a head coach, Kalen DeBoer has led teams to two bowl wins in three tries. DeBoer’s most recent bowl loss was when Washington lost to Michigan 34-13 in the College Football Playoff National Championship Jan. 8.
