Alabama students ‘Challenge the Chairman’ Tuesday

University of Alabama students had the opportunity to “Challenge the Chairman” Tuesday during an interactive event as part of the Alabama GOP’s efforts to engage young voters.

Alabama GOP Chair John Wahl is the youngest Republican state party chair in the country, and he said the need for young minds and voices starts on college campuses.

He also expresses the need for open dialogue regarding policy, voting and securing a stronger and freer America.

“I want to talk to them about (voting) and explain why the Republican Party is the one that has the issues and values that will best represent them moving forward,” Wahl said. “And encourage them to get involved in the process because we need young people in the process. They are going to be the future leaders. I believe that Republican values can stand up to any other values on the face of the planet.”

The one-on-one conversations between Wahl and students allowed opportunities and prosperity for discussions on important topics for young voters to engage in.

“I think college students a lot of the times really like to complain,” said UA College of Republicans Chair Riley McArdle. “It’s something that we deal with all the time. People complain about this or that, but when you’ve got a chance to make an impact in the stuff that you want to complain about, you need to take that chance. You need to go out and learn about, you know, Canada and their possessions, different parties and policies, and then go into make that decision so then if you do complain at least you did something about it.”

McArdle said he is glad an event like this can happen at UA because he believes college-age voters will be a key demographic in the election.

Wahl said he hopes this type of event can expand to other college campuses across Alabama to connect with young voters in the state and continue to encourage college students to use their voices.
