Kamala Harris and Donald Trump were in a race to 270 Electoral Votes to become President of the United States.
Trump, who clinched Wisconsin and its 10 Electoral Votes earlier this evening, has crossed the magic mark to become the 47th President of the United States.
But which states voted for Trump?
And which went for Harris?
It is important to know that Michigan and Arizona, at the moment, remain too close to call, while Maine split its Electoral Votes between Harris and Trump.
Let’s take a closer look:
States that voted for Donald Trump
Wisconsin: Trump’s win in Wisconsin put him over the 270 threshold needed to clinch the presidency. Trump, who had lost the state to Biden four years ago, previously won it in 2016 against Hillary Clinton.
Nevada: Nevada, with its six Electoral Votes, also went for Trump. This came as a surprise to many considering that a famed pollster within the state had predicted a Harris victory.
Pennsylvania: Trump won Pennsylvania, arguably the biggest swing state prize, and its 19 Electoral Votes, rather easily. The state previously went for Joe Biden by a single point in 2020. Trump earlier won the state over Hillary Clinton by a single point in 2016.
West Virginia: Trump has won West Virginia and its four Electoral Votes. The state, which is predominantly rural, has a relatively small and homogenous population. It is one of the least diverse states in the US, with whites comprising around 92 per cent of its residents.
Alaska: Alaska, a reliably red state, also gave its three Electoral Votes to Trump. Alaska has voted for the Republican in every election since it became a state, except for Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
Iowa: Iowa and its six Electoral Votes also went for Trump in a tighter-than-expected race. Though Trump was always favoured in the state, the Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll published Saturday shocked many by showing that Harris was leading the former president.
Missouri: The Associated Press also gave Missouri and its 10 Electoral Votes to Trump.
Arkansas: Trump secured Arkansas’ six electoral votes on Tuesday, winning the heavily Republican state for the third presidential election in a row. Trump had the backing of the state’s top Republican figures, including Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Democrats have not won a presidential election in Arkansas since 1996, when native son Bill Clinton won reelection.
Idaho: Trump won Idaho for the third consecutive election on Tuesday, adding four electoral votes to his tally. Idaho is deeply red, and the Republican presidential nominee has carried the state with more than 60% of the vote for the last several elections. The last time a Democratic presidential nominee won Idaho was 60 years ago, when Lyndon Johnson beat Republican Barry Goldwater by a narrow margin of just over 5,300 votes.
Montana: Trump won Montana for the third consecutive election on Tuesday, adding its four electoral votes to his tally. Montana has one more electoral vote this cycle than it did in the previous two, as the state received an additional congressional seat following the 2020 census. Montana has gone to the Republican nominee for president in all but one election going back to 1968
Wyoming: The cowboy state and its three Electoral Votes went for Trump yet again.Trump won 72 per cent of Wyoming voter’s support, according to the Associated Press. That’s up from 69.5% in 2020.
Utah: Donald Trump won Utah and its six electoral votes on Tuesday. A Democratic presidential candidate has not won in Utah since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. Voters have historically favored moderate Republicans in statewide elections.
North Dakota: Trump won North Dakota’s three electoral votes on Tuesday. His victory continues a decadeslong streak of Republican presidential wins in the conservative state known for its agriculture and energy production. The last Democratic presidential candidate to win the state was President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. North Dakota has about 784,000 residents.
South Dakota: Trump won South Dakota’s three electoral votes for president Tuesday. The Republican nominee had been expected to prevail comfortably in a state where GOP voters outnumber Democrats by more than 2-to-1. No Democratic nominee has carried South Dakota since President Lyndon Johnson won in 1964. Trump received nearly 62 per cent of the vote in each of his previous runs for president, and both times his margin was more than 26 percentage points. Almost 51 per cent of the state’s 616,000 registered voters are Republicans, while fewer than 24 per cent are Democrats.
Kentucky:
Trump was projected to win Kentucky and its eight Electoral Votes. With 98.2 per cent of the vote in, Trump had around 65 per cent of the vote. He won the state by 26 points in 2020.
Nebraska: Trump won four out of five of Nebraska’s Electoral College votes. This is because Nebraska, like Maine, assigns its EVs on a proportional basis.
Kansas: Trump won Kansas and its six electoral votes on Tuesday. Republican candidates have carried Kansas in every presidential election since 1964, and it was the third election in a row that Trump has won the state. Kansas City-area suburbs that once were reliable GOP strongholds started leaning more Democratic after Trump was elected president in 2016, but Trump has retained his strong popularity in much of the state and particularly in rural areas.
Oklahoma: Trump won Oklahoma and its seven electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. A Democrat has not won the presidential race in Oklahoma since 1964, and Trump was heavily favored to win. The last time a Democrat won one of Oklahoma’s 77 counties in a presidential race was in 2000 when Al Gore won nine counties in the eastern part of the state during his loss to then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush.
Mississippi: Trump won Mississippi on Tuesday, claiming the state’s six electoral votes and continuing a long winning streak for Republicans. The last Democratic presidential nominee to win Mississippi was Jimmy Carter in 1976. Republicans hold both of Mississippi’s US Senate seats, three of its four US House seats, all eight statewide offices and a wide majority in the state House and Senate. Governor Tate Reeves and most other Republican officials in Mississippi endorsed Trump.
Florida: The adopted home state of former US president Donald Trump, Florida has voted red, earning the state’s 30 electoral votes. Once a vital swing state, Florida has been leaning increasingly Republican in recent years, with no Democratic presidential candidate winning since Barack Obama’s victory in 2012.
Donald Trump not only improved his 2020 performance in Republican areas across Florida but also made gains in the state’s competitive regions, positioning himself to surpass Vice President Kamala Harris in some moderately Democratic areas.
North Carolina: Republican former president Donald Trump is projected to win North Carolina, the first of seven battleground states. CNN, NBC and ABC News all called the race in Trump’s favour in the southeastern state, which he also won in the 2020 election. This win gives Trump 16 electoral votes.
South Carolina: South Carolina’s and its nine Electoral Votes went to Trump. The Palmetto State is known to be primarily red with presidential candidates rarely taking time to campaign there. Trump’s campaign has seen previous popularity as the former president carried the state in 2016 by 14 points and 2020 by 12 points. The last time South Carolina voted for a Democratic nominee for president was 1976 for former Georgia governor, Jimmy Carter. Carter narrowly defeated incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford.
Louisiana: Trump won Louisiana and its eight Electoral Votes on Tuesday for the third consecutive presidential election. In addition to voter support, Trump has various powerful political allies in and from the Bayou State, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Gov. Jeff Landry. In Louisiana, where the GOP currently holds each statewide elected office and controls the legislature, the Republican nominee for president has won every election since 1996.

Georgia: Former President Donald Trump will win the key battleground state of Georgia, CNN projects. There are 16 electoral votes at stake in Georgia. In the 2020 elections, Georgia had flipped blue for the first time, helping Joe Biden win the bid to the White House.
Alabama: A dominant red state, Alabama hasn’t disappointed Donald Trump and has voted for the former US president. With the win in Alabama, he has won nine electoral votes. Four years ago too, in 2020, Trump won Alabama, securing 62 per cent of the vote to Joe Biden’s 37 per cent. Alabama last voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in 1976, and the state has not been a battleground since 1980.
Ohio: Donald Trump has won Ohio, securing 17 of its electoral votes. This will be his third consecutive victory in the increasingly reddening swing state. Economic anxiety and flawed border and immigration policies have bolstered Trump’s support in Ohio.
Indiana: The Hoosier state has given its 11 electoral votes to Donald Trump. The last time the state didn’t vote red was in 2008 when Barack Obama emerged winner.
Tennessee: Tennessee remains a Republican stronghold. It was among the first states in the country to declare a winner in the presidential election. The Volunteer State’s 11 electoral votes have gone to former President Donald Trump.
Texas: Texas voters have chosen Donald Trump, according to The Associated Press, giving the Republican nominee the state’s 40 electoral votes and continuing its streak of going red in every presidential election since it went for Jimmy Carter in 1976. Governor Greg Abbott celebrated Trump’s victory. “Congratulations to President Donald Trump on his overwhelming victory in Texas,” Abbott said in a statement. “Texans know who will slash inflation, secure our southern border, unleash American energy and crack down on violent crime — and that’s Donald Trump. Texans rejected Kamala Harris’ leftist agenda and voted to restore freedom, prosperity, and opportunity for all Americans.”

Illiniois: The land of Abraham Lincoln and its 19 Electoral Votes went for Harris on Tuesday. The reliably blue state, the home of former President Barack Obama, has supported Democratic presidential candidates since 1992.
California: News outlets have called the race for Vice President Kamala Harris and with this has secured 54 electoral votes. In recent years, California has become a Democratic stronghold, with the state supporting Joe Biden in 2020 by a wide margin of 64 per cent to Trump’s 35 per cent. The last time a Republican presidential candidate won the state of California was in 1988 with the election of George HW Bush.
New York: Harris has won New York with more than 60 per cent vote share, reported news agency AP as the traditionally blue state delivered zero surprises in the US elections. The Empire State awards 28 electoral votes. The last time a Republican won New York was former President Reagan in 1984.
New York was previously home to former US President Trump, who was born in Queens. He was a long-time New York real estate tycoon before he relocated to Florida.

Washington: The Democrat nominee has secured 12 electoral votes with the win in Washington. This win continues a trend of the Evergreen State backing Democrats for president since 1988.
Massachusetts: Harris has secured a win in the state, securing its 11 Electoral College votes. Four years ago, President Biden defeated then-President Trump in Massachusetts. A Republican president hasn’t taken the state since Ronald Reagan won in 1984.
Vermont: Harris won the Democratic stronghold of Vermont on Tuesday. The small state has voted in favor of Democratic candidates in the previous eight presidential elections. Vermont Governor Phil Scott, a Republican, has been a critic of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and voted for Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
Colorado: Harris won Colorado on Tuesday, picking up the state’s 10 Electoral Votes. Colorado was once a purple state, flipping between Democratic and Republican presidential candidates, but it has shifted blue in the past two decades. The last Republican presidential candidate to snag Colorado’s electoral votes was George W. Bush in 2004. Since then, it’s backed Democratic presidential candidates, with Joe Biden winning it handily in 2020. Colorado gained its 10th electoral vote after the 2020 census, attributed to population growth around Denver.
New Hampshire: Harris won New Hampshire on Wednesday, continuing the state’s two-decade-long streak of awarding its four electoral votes to Democrats. New Hampshire has backed Democrats in seven of the last eight presidential elections. Harris’ win comes nine months after the Democratic National Committee bypassed New Hampshire as the leadoff presidential primary. It’s the third time that Republican Donald Trump has won New Hampshire’s GOP primary but lost the state in the general election.
Delaware: Harris won Delaware’s presidential contest Tuesday, easily defeating Republican Donald Trump. Harris’ victory in solid-blue Delaware was a foregone conclusion, given the stranglehold Democrats have held on the state’s three electoral votes for decades. The last Republican presidential candidate to win in Delaware was George H.W. Bush in 1988. That’s also the last time Delaware voters elected a Republican governor. Delaware’s congressional delegation for years has been composed entirely of Democrats, who also control both chambers of the state legislature.
Maryland: Harris won Maryland and its 10 electoral votes on Tuesday. Maryland is a heavily Democratic state that is home to many federal workers next to the nation’s capital. The state has a Black population of about 30 per cent, the largest percentage of any state outside the Deep South. Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-1 in the state. Former President Donald Trump is deeply unpopular in Maryland. In 2020, Trump received just 32 per cent of the vote. A Republican has not won a presidential election in the state since George H.W. Bush in 1988.
Virginia: Harris won Virginia on Tuesday, taking its 13 electoral Votes. Harris’ victory marks the third time Donald Trump has lost the Old Dominion state. The Democratic nominee for president has won Virginia in every election since 2008.
Rhode Island: Harris won Rhode Island on Tuesday, giving her four electoral votes and continuing the Democrats’ dominance in the state. The last time a Republican presidential candidate won Rhode Island was in 1984, when former President Ronald Reagan defeated former Vice President Walter Mondale. President Joe Biden easily defeated former President Donald Trump in Rhode Island in 2020, winning more than 59% of the vote. Hillary Clinton also did well in the state, winning over 54% of the vote in 2016. Given the Democrats’ success in Rhode Island, presidential candidates rarely spend time campaigning in the state.
Connecticut: Harris won Connecticut on Tuesday, extending the state’s long trend of supporting Democratic presidential candidates and adding seven electoral votes to her tally. This year marked the ninth consecutive presidential election in which Connecticut voters favored the Democratic candidate. The last Republican presidential candidate to win the state was George H.W. Bush in 1988. Former President Donald Trump has now lost Connecticut three times, first to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, then to Joe Biden and now to Harris.
New Mexico: Harris won New Mexico on Tuesday, taking its five electoral votes. The Democratic Party’s influence in New Mexico has only grown over the last two decades, with former President George W. Bush being the last Republican to win the state in 2004. Harris never made any campaign stops in the state, but support in New Mexico’s more populous areas outweighed voters in conservative pockets as second-term Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and members of the state’s congressional delegation campaigned on the vice president’s behalf.
District of Columbia: Harris won the District of Columbia on Tuesday, securing the capital’s three electoral votes. Harris’ win in D.C. is no surprise – the District is a longtime Democratic stronghold whose government repeatedly feuded with Republican Donald Trump when he was the president. Trump has described modern-day Washington as a crime-ridden dystopia, and Republican allies in Congress have threatened to strip DC of its limited autonomy.
Hawaii: Harris won Hawaii and the state’s four electoral votes on Wednesday. It’s the 10th straight presidential election in which Hawaii has selected the Democratic Party candidate. The state last picked a Republican for the nation’s top office 40 years ago, when Ronald Reagan emerged victorious in 1984. Hawaii is a solidly blue state, with Democrats controlling all statewide elected offices and the state’s two U.S. House seats. Democrats have also long controlled more than three-quarters of the seats in both the state House and Senate.
