Farmers’ Almanac predicts ‘wet winter whirlwind’ for 2024: What can Alabama expect?

Alabama’s seemingly never-ending summer continues, some like to think about cooler temperatures coming this winter.

The Farmers’ Almanac is aiding with that by issuing its winter weather forecast for the United States.

For the U.S. as a whole, the Almanac foresees what is is calling a “Wet Winter Whirlwind” with multiple winter storms and lots of rain and snow.

What about for Alabama? The Almanac is predicting a “mild and wet” winter for the state, as well as much of the Southeast.

The Almanac, which has been in the weather prognostication business for about 200 years now, thinks that La Nina will be a big influence on winter weather across the U.S.

La Nina is a climate phenomenon that involves the cooling of the ocean waters off the coast of South America. Those cooler waters can help shift weather patterns worldwide.

“Taking into account the effect La Nina has on the weather, along with our long-standing formula, we anticipate the winter of 2024-25 will be wet and cold for most locations,” the Almanac said.

Almanac forecasters particularly highlighted the last week of January, when an Arctic blast is anticipated, especially across the northern Plains states and the Great Lakes region.

The Almanac said it was “red flagging” Jan. 20-23 and 24-27 for a very active storm track that could bring heavy precipitation and gusty winds for parts of the eastern U.S.

Alabama could escape the worst winter cold, however.

According to the Almanac, the Southeast and Atlantic coast “should experience a warm-ish winter, with above-average temperatures.”

The Almanac said it crafts its forecasts “using a tried-and-true formulation that adapts to the mysteries of nature and the ever-changing world in which we live. The basis of our prediction method was developed by our founding editor according to correlations between celestial events and various meteorological conditions.”

Some upcoming winter dates:

* Sept. 1 — Start of meteorological winter

* Sept. 22 — Autum equinox

* Dec. 1 — Start of meteorological winter

* Dec. 21 — Winter solstice
