With top-25 matchups galore littering its schedule, the 2024 SEC Champion Georgia football team topped the Nielsen ratings as the most watched football team in 2024 — and by quite a wide margin.
Georgia football brought in an average of 8.6 million viewers per game this season, which was 1.8 million more viewers than Ohio State’s average. Alabama (6.6 million), Texas (6.4 million) and Tennessee (5.4 million) rounded out Nielsen’s top-five most watched programs.
Alabama and Texas were bolstered by home matchups against the Bulldogs, as well as Georgia’s win over Texas in the SEC Championship game on Saturday that drew in 16.6 million viewers.
Georgia’s win at Texas in October drew in 13 million viewers while the Bulldogs’ late-September loss at Alabama brought in 12 million.
Georgia’s opening-week matchup against Clemson drew 8 million viewers, the most for a Week 1 noon game in history. Its game against Tennessee in November drew more than 10 million viewers.
This was the first time Nielsen had released this type of ratings for college football viewership. Disney, which owns ESPN and ABC, was the clear winner in its first year of having the SEC on ABC.
Georgia has a first-round by in the new 12-team playoff and will face the winner of Notre Dame and Indiana in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day.
