What Alabama football fans should expect for this year’s first home game

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Football fans are revving up for a new season with the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide, as they kick off their first home game of 2024 on Saturday.

Following Nick Saban’s retirement earlier this year, one of the biggest changes in the program is UA’s new head football coach Kalen DeBoer.

“New coaching regime wanted to come over at a different time,” UA’s Associate Director for Event Management with Transportation Services Nick Frenz said.

The team will make their way down the Walk of Champions at 3:30 p.m. before kicking off the game with Western Kentucky at 6 p.m.

“I think he wanted to get here earlier than what they had in the past,” Frenz said. “That’s why we’re doing it two and half hours [before kick-off] and that will be the way it is during the season.”

Just like DeBoer plans to show up earlier than what fans are used to, the Alabama Department of Transportation suggested fans also plan to head out earlier.

“The biggest mistake we see is not leaving early enough,” ALDOT’s West Alabama Region spokesperson Ken Colvert said.

Game days in Tuscaloosa bring in a lot of traffic, and ALDOT anticipates even more motorists on the road with Bama fans eager to watch the first game under DeBoer.

“I would encourage everyone to leave early. Plan. Be patient. There is going to be a lot of people in town,” Colvert said.

ALDOT posted game day signage along the interstate to help fans know which exits lead them to the Bryant-Denny Stadium. ALDOT recommends downloading the ALGO app for real-time traffic information.

Once fans get off the interstate and within the Tuscaloosa City limits, ALDOT and UA encourage using McFarland Boulevard as the main route to directly connect to the university’s main exit.
