Alaska’s deep investment in the new terminal reflects its commitment to improving the traveler experience at PDX.
Portland International Airport (PDX) reopened its main terminal on Wednesday after more than three years of renovations. In addition to the facility’s spacious outdoor feel, Alaska Airlines has introduced new technology to enhance the passenger experience.
The Seattle-based carrier, which is the largest operator at PDX, has been focused on streamlining the time it takes for travelers to reach security checkpoints. Thanks to a new system with innovative technology, the airline says passengers will be able to move “more seamlessly through the lobby and into security in five minutes or less.”
“Simplifies dropping off bags”
Charu Jain, Alaska’s Senior Vice President of Innovation and Merchandising, spoke about the carrier’s new features in the terminal.
“With nearly 90% of our passengers now checking in before they arrive at the airport, we’ve launched our lobby of the future experience in Portland which simplifies dropping off bags and gets guests quickly through the lobby so they can enjoy everything the new terminal has to offer.”

The process begins with passengers dropping off their checked baggage. Rather than a traditional kiosk, custom Apple iPads print bag tags by scanning a mobile boarding pass. Then, automated bag drop stations scan and accept the checked bags after the passenger is securely matched with their government-issued ID.

This will eliminate the need for travelers to wait in line for an agent to manually check their bags. Alaska has partnered with self-service technology leader Embross to develop the automated bag drop stations.
“The PDX bag drop experience leverages some of the latest innovations in computer vision to deliver the convenience and efficiency of automated bag processing while also ensuring user safety and security compliance to TSA ID-check requirements,” said Myles Tzelepis, Embraoss’ Chief Technology Officer.
PDX’s largest carrier
Shane Jones, Alaska’s Senior Vice President of Fleet, Revenue Products, and Real Estate, said the carrier’s investment in PDX is critical to its future.
“As our second largest hub, Portland is an essential part of Alaska’s future. Our deep collaboration and joint investment with the Port of Portland on this new world-class terminal highlights our focus on improving how our guests travel.”
Continued growth
Alaska has been PDX’s largest carrier for more than two decades and is focused on continued growth. With a total of 110 peak daily flights to 55 nonstop destinations on mainline aircraft and planes operated by its wholly-owned regional carrier Horizon Air, the airline has increased its presence at PDX by 17% compared to last year. Nearly 30 destinations are served exclusively by the airline. Some routes have been a “crucial transportation link to smaller cities and communities.” Alaska recently commenced nonstop service from Portland to Miami and Nashville, while later this year, it will begin nonstop flights to Atlanta and New Orleans.

“The new PDX was designed to double down on everything travelers love about our airport,” said Dan Pippenger, Port of Portland’s Chief Aviation Officer. “Our partners at Alaska Airlines understood that vision from the beginning and helped us build a new main terminal that both improves the travel experience and celebrates our region.”
Alaska is also preparing to open a new lounge at PDX. The 12,000-square-foot space, which will feature a modern Pacific Northwest vibe, is set to open in 2026.
