Alaska DMV Partners with Thales to Launch Next-Gen Secure Driver’s Licenses and ID Cards

(IN BRIEF) The Alaska DMV has awarded Thales a new contract to provide secure, next-generation driver’s licenses and ID cards, featuring cutting-edge security technology. The polycarbonate cards, with laser-engraved translucent windows and biometric verification, are designed to prevent identity fraud and counterfeiting. This renewed partnership, set for up to 10 years, will see 225,000 advanced cards issued annually starting in fall 2024, making Alaska the first U.S. state to adopt this innovative technology.

(PRESS RELEASE) LA DÉFENSE, 14-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has awarded Thales a new contract to produce secure, next-generation driver’s licenses and ID cards. With this second consecutive partnership, Thales will supply nearly 225,000 advanced polycarbonate cards annually for up to 10 years. Alaska residents will be the first in the U.S. to receive these innovative, laser-engraved cards featuring translucent windows for enhanced security.

The new cards are designed with cutting-edge security features, including Thales Window Lock technology, which embeds a secondary portrait that becomes visible when held up to light, adding an extra layer of counterfeit protection. These durable polycarbonate cards cannot be altered without visible damage, ensuring the highest level of security for Alaskans.

In addition to physical security, Thales’ Cogent Multi Biometric System will provide biometric verification to further safeguard identities and prevent fraud. The new driver’s licenses and ID cards will be available across Alaska DMV sites starting in fall 2024.

Lauren Whiteside, Operations Manager for the Alaska DMV, emphasized the importance of this renewed partnership, noting the advanced protection these new credentials will offer against evolving security threats. Tony Lo Brutto, Vice President for Thales Identity and Biometric Solutions in North America, expressed confidence in continuing to deliver state-of-the-art identity solutions for Alaska.

In the United States, Thales has conducted significant research and development, manufacturing, and service capabilities for more than 130 years. Today, Thales has 37 locations around the U.S., employing nearly 5,000 people. Working closely with U.S. customers and local partners, Thales is able to meet the most complex requirements for every operating environment.
