The US Coast Guard announced that it would deploy aircraft, boats, specialised forces and other equipment to secure the country’s maritime borders in the Gulf of Mexico, now referred to as the ‘Gulf of America’ after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename the ocean basin.
Following the President’s executive order on Monday, the Interior Secretary has initiated the process to change the name of the petrol-rich ocean basin to ‘Gulf of America’ on official US maps and documents.
Part of the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico is an ocean basin, encircled by Guatemala, Cuba, Mexico and the US states of Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia.
The acting Coast Guard chief Kevin Lunday said that the maritime law enforcement agency will be targeting the “maritime border between Texas and Mexico in the Gulf of America” in a bid to enforce President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
Keeping up with Trump’s executive order, the US Coast Guard will be increasing its presence in Florida to detect and prevent migrants from Haiti and Cuba. It will also increase focus on maritime borders in and around Hawaii and Alaska.
“The US Coast Guard is the world’s premiere maritime law enforcement agency, vital to protecting America’s maritime borders, territorial integrity and sovereignty,” said Lunday in a statement, adding, “Per the President’s Executive Orders, I have directed my operational commanders to immediately surge assets—cutters, aircraft, boats and deployable specialised forces.”
In the statement, the US Coast Guard chief further stated that they will also increase its presence in the US territories of Guam and Virgin Islands.
Lunday also stated that the maritime law agency will be working in coordination with Homeland Security and Department of Defense to “detect, deter and interdict illegal migration, drug smuggling and other terrorist or hostile activity before it reaches our border”.
