Find out the US Post Office’s Christmas shipping deadlines this holiday season

If you’re looking to ship your Christmas gifts on time this holiday season, you’d be wise to refer to the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) recent announcement for Christmas shipping deadlines.

During the extremely busy holiday shopping season, it’s imperative to know when’s the last day you can ship and expect a package to arrive by Christmas Day.

Fortunately, the U.S. Postal Service has got you covered.

Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday this year as USPS offices are closed on Sundays even though mail does get processed. Of course, New Year’s Day is always one week after Christmas Day, so Jan. 1, 2025, falls on a Wednesday as well. This means post offices in the U.S. will be closed then too.

According to a press release issued earlier this month, anyone using USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail Service to ship packages within the United States must ship by Dec. 18. Meanwhile, the deadline for Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express is Dec. 19 and Dec. 21.

Anyone using USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail Service to ship packages to Hawaii and Alaska must ship by Dec. 16 and Dec. 18. Meanwhile, the deadline for Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express is Dec. 19 and Dec. 20.

Here’s the USPS Christmas shipping deadline breakdown:

Dec. 16: USPS Ground Advantage deadline for packages sent to Alaska and Hawaii.Dec. 18: First-Class mail service deadline and USPS Ground Advantage deadline for continental U.S.Dec. 19: Priority Mail deadline.Dec. 20: Priority Mail Express deadline for Alaska/Hawaii.Dec. 21: Priority Mail Express deadline for continental U.S.Dec. 25: Christmas Day.

As for international shipping deadlines for Christmas, there isn’t a firm deadline for shipping gifts internationally. The USPS also suggests mid-month for countries nearest America, such as Canada, and early December for more remote countries in Africa.

All in all, USPS urges customers to plan ahead and ship early this holiday season, where the earlier you send, the better.
