North Dakota Tops 2024 List of Hardest-Working States in America

North Dakota is the hardest-working state in the United States, according to a 2024 report by WalletHub. The Roughrider State secured the top spot by boasting the highest employment rate in the nation and one of the longest average workweeks.

North Dakota’s success stems from its 98% employment rate and the fact that residents between 16 and 64 years old work an average of 39.7 hours per week, the third-highest in the country. Additionally, 33.5% of workers in North Dakota leave some vacation time unused, highlighting the state’s strong work ethic.

Alaska ranks second, with workers averaging 41.6 hours per week, the highest in the country. The Last Frontier also has one of the highest rates of workers holding multiple jobs, further solidifying its position as a state where residents are committed to their work.

Nebraska follows closely in third place. The Cornhusker State stands out for its high percentage of workers with multiple jobs and a low rate of “idle youth”—those aged 18-24 who are neither in school nor employed.

This report underscores the dedication of workers in these top-ranked states, but experts caution that the culture of hard work can have downsides. Cassandra Happe, a WalletHub analyst, notes that while hard work is commendable, it is important for residents of the hardest-working states to find a balance to avoid potential negative impacts on physical and mental health.

The study by WalletHub compared all 50 states across 10 key metrics, including average workweek hours, employment rates, and the percentage of workers leaving vacation time unused, to determine where Americans work the hardest.
