Which Foreign Passenger Airlines Serve Anchorage International Airport?

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC), is the primary gateway for most travelers to the state of Alaska. While most commercial passenger operations are domestic flights to other US states, a small number of foreign international carriers connect from their respective hubs to the Last Frontier state.

Located just five miles southwest of downtown Anchorage, the airport is a hub today for Alaska Airlines. The airline has grown substantially since its early days and now commands an extensive route network not only in the state but also on the west coast of the mainland US. Another smaller carrier, Ravn Alaska, also maintains a hub at ANC.

Due to its location, cargo operations are key in Anchorage, serving as a perfect refueling stop for many larger carriers between Asia and North America. Today, Atlas Air, FedEx Express, Polar Air Cargo, and UPS Airlines all maintain extensive cargo hub operations at the airport.

The airport once saw thousands of flights per week.

While the airport has been mooted multiple times for a convenient one-stop connection point for travel to the Far East, these plans have never fully come to fruition.

There were plans for Northern Pacific to utilize Anchorage to mirror the successes of Iceland Air. However, these are still yet to eventuate. With that in mind, let’s look at the foreign carriers currently visiting Anchorage, and where they are shuttling passengers to:

Air Canada
Seasonal to Vancouver

Air Canada maintained a daily seasonal service direct between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Anchorage throughout the Northern Hemisphere summer. The service, operated by the airline’s Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft fleet, can accommodate up to 16 passengers in business class and 153 in economy. These passengers are treated to 38 inches of seat pitch upfront or 30-34 inches of pitch in the rear.

This 2024 Northern summer, the service ran daily up until September 25, according to the below schedule:

AC1081, departing at 13:35, arriving in Anchorage at 16:03 local time. The average flight time on the route was just over three hours. AC1082, departing Anchorage at 16:55, traveling southwest, and returning to Vancouver at 21:07. Average flight time is just under three hours.

Air Canada has maintained seasonal services to Anchorage for many years, and it would be well expected that these flights not only cater to point-to-point traffic but also connect services from across Canada domestically, in addition to international arrivals and departures at the airline’s west coast hub (YVR).

Condor
Seasonal service to Frankfurt

The German leisure-focused carrier, Condor Airlines, deployed its candy-colored plane to Anchorage this summer season, shuttling European explorers to the Last Frontier state.

Nonstop services operated from Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) to Anchorage through until September 14, when they were wound up for the season. Travelers on the route were treated to the airline’s shiny new Airbus A330-900. Business, Premium, and economy class cabins were offered for the nine-hour journey in each direction.

Passengers onboard the direct Condor flights could make use of the airline’s growing European short-haul network to get to Frankfurt before being shuttled to Anchorage or even travel to the airport by train, with the airline’s ‘Rail and Fly’ program that it offers to those residing closer to Frankfurt.

Operating three times per week, Condor connected Anchorage to the below schedule:

DE2050, departing Frankfurt at 14:30, arriving in Anchorage at 14:10 the same day. Flight time was scheduled at nine hours and 40 minutes. DE2051 departed Anchorage at 17:10, traveled overnight, and arrived in Frankfurt at 12:30 the following day. The Flight time was nine hours and 20 minutes.

Condor Airlines and Alaska Airlines strengthened their partnership last year, giving international passengers more access to Alaska’s US route network in an extensive codeshare partnership. Read more about it below:

Discover Airlines
Seasonal service to Frankfurt

The leisure arm of the Lufthansa Group serves international leisure destinations around the Mediterranean, North America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Over the summer, Discover Airlines deployed its Airbus A330-200 to Anchorage twice weekly.

Operating from Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) to Anchorage on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the airline was competing with Condor (as above) in a similar target market. While Discover operated one fewer weekly flight than Condor, its final flight for the season took place on September 21.

The airline’s schedule followed as follows:

4Y622 departed Frankfurt at 14:20, arriving in Anchorage at 13:30. Flight time was just over nine hours westbound. 4Y63 would depart Anchorage at 16:10 and return to Frankfurt at 11:35 the following morning. The flight time also reached around nine hours on the return.

Onboard Discover’s long journey offered seats for up to 24 in business, 17 in premium, 44 in ‘More Legroom’ Economy, and 270 in the main cabin.
