Sam Sawyer, S.J., president and editor in chief of America, announced today the selection of three graduating seniors from three U.S. colleges to serve as the 2025-26 Joseph A. O’Hare, S.J., Postgraduate Media Fellows. This year’s fellows are:
Edward Desciak: graduating senior, Yale University
William Gualtiere: graduating senior, Fordham University
Brigid McCabe: graduating senior, Columbia University
O’Hare fellows spend one year at America Media working on print, digital, audio and film projects while benefiting from mentoring and professional development opportunities. Fellows reside at Fordham University Lincoln Center, where they engage in a dynamic community in the heart of New York City, the media capital of the world.
The Joseph A. O’Hare, S.J., Postgraduate Media Fellowship is a program of America Media, co-sponsored by Fordham University. The fellowship is named in honor and memory of Joseph A. O’Hare, S.J., who served as editor in chief of America (1975-84) and president of Fordham University (1984-2003).
The O’Hare fellowship is made possible through the generosity of William J. Loschert, KSG, of Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business, Class of 1961, and a former member of America Media’s board of directors.
About the 2025-26 O’Hare fellows
Edward Desciak is a graduating senior at Yale University majoring in Ethics, Politics and Economics with a concentration in religion and American politics. During his time at Regis High School in New York City, Edward gained an affinity for Jesuit thought and spirituality which has shaped his academic work at Yale. His senior thesis explores the shift in economic guidance of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in the late 20th century. Beyond his studies, Edward is passionate about criminal justice reform, having received fellowship and grant funding for his nonprofit work as a paralegal with a civil rights and criminal defense attorney in New Haven. Some of his other passions include Irish literature, music and debating sports with friends. As an O’Hare Fellow, he looks forward to exploring the interplay between Catholicism and American politics, reflecting on faith and engaging in cultural commentary and criticism.
William Gualtiere is a graduating senior at Fordham University, where he studies Film and Television and serves as an intern and leader for Fordham’s retreat team. During his time at Fordham, William studied the recent Synod on Synodality and traveled to Rome to observe the event in Fall 2023. Outside of campus life, William is currently working as a development intern for Broadway Video just a few doors away from America. Originally from Shelton, Conn., William has been Jesuit-educated since high school when he attended Fairfield College Preparatory School. As an O’Hare Fellow, William is eager to discover the many intersections between spirituality and entertainment.
Brigid McCabe is a graduating senior at Columbia University, where she studies American Studies and History with a focus on the American legal system. Originally from Bayonne, N.J., Brigid graduated from Notre Dame School of Manhattan in 2021. At Columbia, Brigid competes on the varsity Cross Country and Track teams as a distance runner. She has worked on campus as a resident advisor and currently serves as the Marketing Vice Chair for the Columbia College Senior Fund. Brigid was a summer intern at America Media in 2023, and has also worked at two legal nonprofits, The Waterfront Project and Northeast New Jersey Legal Services. In her free time, Brigid enjoys novels, documentaries, sports and live music. As an O’Hare Fellow, Brigid is excited to explore questions about human dignity, civil rights and the intersections between faith and culture.
About the O’Hare Fellowship
The Joseph A. O’Hare, S.J., Postgraduate Media Fellowship supports the next generation of writers for the Catholic media and other forms of professional journalism. The fellowship offers three recent graduates of Jesuit and non-Jesuit colleges or universities in the United States or Canada the opportunity to develop their literary skills and professional relationships while living and working in the capital of global communications, New York City.
O’Hare fellows spend 11 months working at the offices of America Media, where they will generate content for America’s multiple platforms: print, web, digital, social media and events. O’Hare fellows enjoy a rich personal and professional experience through ongoing mentoring and other opportunities. Fellows meet regularly with America’s editorial staff, including James Martin, S.J., editor at large of America and a New York Times best-selling author, in order to cultivate their skills and professional networks.
At the conclusion of the program, O’Hare fellows are uniquely suited to pursue successful careers in the Catholic media or other forms of professional journalism. O’Hare fellows receive housing at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus, health care coverage and a monthly stipend for living expenses during the 11 months of the program.
