Scores of people turned out on a rainy Wednesday night for a debate moderated by the Luxembourg Times on the US presidential election contest and the issues it raises for America, Luxembourg and the world more broadly.
Communications specialist LaTasha Baker of the group Democrats Abroad spoke on behalf of Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris, while William Abundes of Republicans Overseas spoke for Republican Party candidate Donald Trump. The American Chamber of Commerce in Luxembourg supported the event marked by the speakers’ energetic but mostly respectful duelling.

The discussion held at the University of Luxembourg’s Limpertsberg campus featured questions from a primarily anti-Trump audience, though one question from a Spanish attendee about the US continuing to supply bombs to Israel to use during its deadly assault in Gaza forced Baker to squirm.
Abundes, a candidate during last year’s local elections for the right-wing ADR party, was scorned for repeating disproven Trump tropes including that some American states allowed the murder of nearly-born infants and that legally residing Haitian immigrants were responsible for stealing and eating dogs and cats.
Besides immigration, Baker and Abundes represented the candidates’ views on how to tackle inflation, how to boost the US economy, and whether Trump and Harris would respect the election results if they lost. Questions also included how America would approach the war in Ukraine, future relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and whether the Nato alliance could continue to count on US military might from next year.
Harris and Trump debated each other 10 September in a first encounter after Joe Biden’s exit from the presidential race. While Harris accepted an invitation for a second debate, Trump has said he would not face the Democratic candidate again.
Americans head to the polls on 5 November.
