It’s been smooth sailing for Argentina so far in 2024, although the first two group stage games were a lot closer than most might expect. Argentina should’ve racked up more goals on Canada, and only really created separation late in the game. Lautaro Martinez, who has been on fire, scored the winning goal over rivals Chile in the 88th minute for a 1-0 win. That game could’ve easily been a draw. Martinez has scored three goals in the last two games. Ecuador were facing disaster with star striker Enner Valencia effectively done for the first two games after picking up a red card in the opener against Venezuela. The squad was able to rally for a 3-1 win over Jamaica before seeing out a 0-0 draw against Mexico to advance.
The big injury news for this match is Lionel Messi, who sat out the final group stage game with some hamstring discomfort. Messi has battled leg and hamstring injuries lately but the veteran was seen in training and is expected to play. Valencia came back from suspension for the final match for Ecuador, who has no other injuries of note.
Despite the familiarity between the two sides, I don’t think Ecuador’s back line can hold up against Argentina’s attack. Ecuador has usually taken care of business against opponents of lesser or similar quality, but this is a big step up. Back the defending Copa America champions to take care of business and move on to the semifinal round.
