Arizona lawmakers are advancing a bill to make high schools follow a recent directive from President Donald Trump to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
HB 2700 would require “the State Board of Education (SBE) to include instruction on the Gulf of America when next updating the high school social studies academic standards.”
Backed by 17 Republican co-sponsors, Rep. Teresa Martinez introduced the bill and says this is about aligning with the president’s view.
“I do think words matter, I do think language is important, and I do think in order to start teaching patriotism, the love of your country in small children, that we have to call things what they are called,” Martinez said.
The Democratic House minority leader says the bill is silly and should not be a legislative priority.
A recent Marquette University poll shows that the name change is deeply unpopular nationwide.
The Chandler Unified School District is partnering with the Arizona Lions Vision and Hearing Foundation to provide free eye exams and glasses for students. The district’s governing board unanimously approved an agreement with the organization this week.
An eventful season for the Seton Catholic Preparatory High School girls basketball team in Chandler recently ended. Seton coach, Karen Self, became the winningest coach in state girls’ basketball history — more than 830 wins over three decades at the school.
The legislation directs public and charter schools to implement and enforce policies that restrict students’ access to social media and phones during the school day.
The University of Arizona changed its land acknowledgement, and UA President Suresh Garimella told faculty by email last week that the university is “creating an inventory of our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA)-related programs.”
Even years after the pandemic drove public schooling largely online, experts say more desks are empty in Arizona schools every day than there should be. Early Monday, the state board of education received the results of a study that shows chronic absenteeism continuing to plague Arizona schools.
