Arizona Cardinals beat New England Patriots in season-critical win
Sports writers Theo Mackie and Bob McManaman discuss the Cardinals 30-17 win over the Patriots and the long odds on a future playoff spot
The Arizona Cardinals will be without three starters and at least one key backup Sunday when they meet the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
Left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. (knee), inside linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. (concussion), outside linebacker Jesse Luketa (thigh) and backup running back Trey Benson (ankle) were listed as “out” on Friday by Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon.
Veteran Kelvin Beachum will step in for Johnson at left tackle and Jonah Williams will be at right tackle. Baron Browning is expected to replace Luketa as the starting edge rusher opposite Zaven Collins. Krys Barnes, meanwhile, is expected to get the primary snaps in place of Wilson alongside Kyzir White, who missed practice Thursday with an illness but should be in the lineup against the Panthers.
Benson’s injury left the Cardinals with only one backup running back behind starter James Conner – DeeJay Dallas – on the active roster. With Emari Demercado on injured reserve, the team is expected to elevate Michael Carter or recently signed Tony Jones Jr. from the practice squad Saturday.
A handful of other players have been on the injury report this week, including Collins (neck), nose tackle Ray Lopez (ankle), rookie defensive lineman Darius Robinson (calf) and cornerbacks Sean Murphy-Bunting (shin) and Max Melton (hand).
As for their status for Sunday’s game, Gannon simply said, “We’ll see.”
The final injury report will come out later Friday.
