Not every race went my way. But we conducted the election the way it used to be, when there weren’t armed protesters and Arizona wasn’t the bane of the nation.
Election 2024: See Arizona’s presidential results by county
As ballots in Arizona are counted for the 2024 election, The Republic breaks them down by county but also shows how many are left to count.
The Republic
Plenty of folks woke up this morning feeling angry, disappointed and bewildered.
Me? I am relieved. And, no, it has nothing to do with who won.
People were speaking in apocalyptic terms about the election. There were snipers and drones ready to quell any signs of insurrection.
But yesterday, it was mostly quiet as people voted.
And today, it’s mostly quiet as votes are counted.
Maybe our good fortune is just circumstance
Arizona is not in the nation’s crosshairs. Even if we’re among the last states to finalize our vote counts, people aren’t breathing down our neck for results.
Maybe it’s just a matter of circumstance. Had Kamala Harris won, or the national tally depended on Arizona, things might be different.
Maybe it’s early. There could still be cries of “fraud!” when the final tallies come in.
Maybe the only reason we’re not witnessing armed protesters, as we did in 2020, is because the election broke in Republicans’ favor.
Arizona election fixed nothing, but it still worked
I’m not saying we’ve fixed our politics.
Or our inability to listen to those with which we disagree, and work together to find compromise for the good of our state. Or our country.
I’d venture that most of us are still sick and tired with where America is headed.
This election fixed nothing.
But it did prove that democracy — messy and frustrating as it is — can still function.
If that doesn’t give you a modicum of hope, well, I don’t know what will.
