Tarantula finds a cozy home on Arizona golf course

A tarantula found a home in a golf hole cup in Sedona. It was later safely removed from the Seven Canyons Golf Course.

The Arizona Golf Association Hall of Fame Committee announced the four inductees for its 2024 Class.

Rob Collins, Amy Fruhwirth and Joe Shershenovich were selected as modern candidates with longtime Arizona Golf Association Executive Director Ed Gowa named as a legacy candidate. They will be inducted during a ceremony at Arizona Biltmore Golf Club on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024.

Collins has been the golf course superintendent at Paradise Valley Country Club since 1995 and has led numerous water conservation initiatives. Collins is also the Arizona Alliance for Golf’s Water Policy Committee Chairman, where he is “actively engaging in discussions with the Arizona Department of Water Resources to develop practical water regulations for the state’s commercial users,” according to the AGA.

Amy Fruhwirth is a former Arizona State golfer who was a three-time All-American and helped the Sun Devils to their first of seven NCAA titles in 1990. She won twice on the LPGA during her 11-year pro career.

Joe Shershenovich is a member of the PGA of America and was named director of golf in 1994 when Grayhawk Golf Club first opened.

Ed Gowan had a 36-year tenure as Executive Director of the Arizona Golf Association. The organization had two staff members and served 120 clubs and 23,000 members when he started. When Gowan retired, the AGA had a staff of 20, and served more than 600 clubs and 90,000 members. He also founded the Arizona Golf Foundation, the AGA’s charitable arm. He was also a rules official and tournament director with the LPGA.

ASU men win first tournament of season

The Arizona State men’s golf team started its 2024-25 season in the win column. The Sun Devils won the Sahalee Players Championship Sunday at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington, on Sunday by 11 shots over Florida.

Aiden Krafft of Oregon won medalist honors but ASU had two players tie for second: senior Josele Ballester, the 2024 U.S. Amateur champion and senior Preston Summerhays, who finished a shot back. It’s the ninth top-five finish in Ballester’s collegiate career.

The ASU men won four times last season, including the Pac-12 Championship.
