Who is Tim Walz? What we know about Kamala Harris’ running mate
Democrat Tim Walz became Minnesota’s governor in 2019 after six terms in the House.
Arizona Gov. Kate Hobbs is not prone to enthusiastic outbursts when answering questions from the press.
She is most often cautious in her responses. Circumspect. Judicious.
What you might call buttoned up.
But not this time.
Approached by reporters and asked what she thought of Vice President Kamala Harris choosing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, an effusive Hobbs said, “Oh my gosh, you should have been in my house and heard my scream when I saw the news this morning. I’m absolutely thrilled that Vice President Harris has chosen him to be her running mate.”
That may seem just a tad — how shall we phrase this? — strange coming from the governor of Arizona, where U.S. Sen. Mark Harris was also among the final group of candidates on Harris’ list of potential running mates.
Hobbs believes Tim Walz is America
With Hobbs, however, the emotion seemed heartfelt and personal.
She said, “I’ve had the chance to work with him (Walz) directly on many issues and have seen firsthand his dedication to the American people. And I know — the governors know — what it takes to deliver for their states, and I am confident that Governor Walz and Vice President Harris will deliver for Arizonans.”

Asked what Walz brings to the ticket, Hobbs said, “Gov. Walz, he is America. A former high school teacher, a football coach, he’s a hunter, he’s a runner. I mean … the vice president had a lot of great people to choose from. So, it was not an easy choice.”
Kelly posted his support for Harris’ choice on X, formerly Twitter, saying, “Vice President @KamalaHarris and Governor @Tim_Walz are going to move us forward. They’re already building a campaign to unite our country — and @GabbyGiffords and I are ready to do everything we can to help them win.”
Asked if Democrats could win in Arizona without Kelly on the ticket, Hobbs said, “I honestly, I think again she had a lot of good choices and I think they’re going to do everything they can to make the case to voters across America, including here in Arizona. We’re going to see that firsthand on Friday.”
The campaign is planning a rally here on that day.
So, yeah, we’ll see.
