What and according to who, is the best place to live in America
If you’re looking to move, or even just visit the places considered the best towns and cities in America, you know that the rankings do constantly change. But based on metrics like, population, cost, education and crime, data driven platforms have found some surprising places climbing the ranks. Yair Ben-Dor has more.
Arizona continues to be a popular destination for people moving in the United States.
Each year, U-Haul tracks the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks arriving in a state or city compared with the net gain of trucks leaving that same state or city, to see where people are moving. The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from over 2.5 million U-Haul truck, trailer and moving container rentals throughout the year.
In 2024, South Carolina topped the list for hopeful U-Haul renters for the first time, according to a release from the company Thursday, beating Texas, which was No. 1 on U-Haul’s list the previous three years. North Carolina came next, and then Florida. Tennessee rounded out the top five.
“Migration to the Southeast and Southwest continues as families gauge their cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life and other factors that go into relocating to a new state,” said John Taylor, U-Haul International president. “Out-migration remains prevalent for a number of markets across the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast — and particularly California.”
Here’s what to know about where people moved to in 2024 and how Arizona ranked.
Which state was the top state for movers for 2024?
South Carolina, the Palmetto State, climbed three spots in the rankings to unseat Texas, U-Haul said.
“While U-Haul rankings may not correlate directly to population or economic growth, the U-Haul Growth Index is an effective gauge of how well states and cities are attracting and maintaining residents,” the company said.
How much growth did Arizona see in 2024 according to U-Haul?
According to U-Haul’s annual analysis of where people are moving to, the Grand Canyon State saw more people moving into the state in 2024.
After ranking eighth in 2023, seventh in 2022 and fifth in 2021, Arizona was the sixth most popular state to move to in 2024. U-Haul’s Growth Index indicates that Arizona had an arrival percentage of 50.3%.
U-Haul also ranked Phoenix the third biggest growth metro in 2024.
U-Haul’s Arizona officials credited the weather as a main factor bringing people to Arizona, but also highlighted the lower cost of living compared with western states like California. Other factors driving migration to metro Phoenix included land space on the outskirts of the Valley, career opportunities and universities drawing students who choose to stay after graduation.
In comparison, many southwestern states fared poorly in U-Haul’s analysis. California was the state most people moved out of in 2024. Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico also saw major declines in the number of people moving into the states.

For the fifth year in a row, the Golden State lost the most people. California was at the bottom of the list again, reflecting the trends of out-migration from other markets across the Northeast, the Midwest and the West Coast.
Joining California for most people moving out in the U-Haul Growth Index were Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
