Forget the Dutchman’s Lost Gold! Arizona’s PinDrop Teardrop Campers Are the Real Gems

Whenever I encounter a travel trailer or camper manufacturer I have never heard of, I like to share the news with you. In the process, diving a tad deeper into how they do things and the sort of machines the brand can produce. With that in mind, it's time to explore the one and only PinDrop Travel Trailers, a manufacturer that strikes close to heart.

Back in 2018, North America witnessed the birth of none other than PinDrop Travel Trailers, a camper manufacturer from good old Arizona. Yes, they're a 100% American crew, and if we consider that they've been able to stay alive in an industry already dominated by countless other brands with decades of history, clearly, there's something they're doing right. Time to see what that is. Now, being a proverbial mom-and-pop camper shop, one neat thing to consider about PinDrop is the process through which they give birth to your dream unit. According to the manufacturer's website, there are four different layouts available. However, they all build upon PinDrop's basic design.

The Vintage is that model, and as you work your way up the feature and upgrade ladder, you'll pass the Road Runner and Scout to finally find yourself within a unit that's very fitting of the region it's crafted in, the El Diablo. If you've ever been to Arizona, you'll agree that this is a fitting name.

Since the Vintage is technically the base for all the other models, I feel this is the one we need to focus on. Not to mention that it's also the least expensive, starting at no more than $28,480 (€25,700 at current exchange rates) with sales tax included. While some readers would argue that this is a rather high price to pay for a teardrop camper, I urge you to read on; don't judge a book by its cover. Like most other travel trailers out there, the Vintage starts off with nothing other than a steel chassis, upon which PinDrop adds a Dexter 3500 Axle suspension. If you choose to climb the layout ladder to the Diablo, this setup is replaced with an axle-less one to clear rough terrain. Be sure to take into consideration the under-mounted spare tire when exploring off-road.

Moving up the Vintage, we arrive at the shell. Here, PinDrop crafts a body that's equipped with closed-cell insulation and rated up to R-15, so with a heater, you may very well be able to venture into the colder months with this one, a plus side for those of us who love their snowboarding or skiing.

One neat side of the shell's story is its galley. Now, I won't lie; I was surprised to see a galley setup very similar to those spotted on Australian teardrop campers, ready with features and systems set up on slide-outs.

So, when it's finally time to pull over for the night or the next days, you'll be able to ready your meals with a two-burner top, fridge and freezers, sinks and faucets, 12 gallons of fresh water, and a few others that are included as you go for more and more equipped layouts. For a moment, try picturing yourself in the presence of this galley, with your significant other putting up the finishing touches on your campsite as you prepare the dinner you'll be having as the sun sets and overlooking the valley below. Enjoy! Maybe you want to turn on that Fosgate sound system while you enjoy the show.

But what's camping if you can't break away from the trailer park? Well, it seems that this is how PinDrop sees things because even the most standard layout, the Vintage, includes an off-grid energy setup. Overall, future owners can look forward to 180 W of standard solar panel power and a 315 Ah battery bank. In all, up to 360 W can be mounted to the roof of these babies.

The rest of a PinDrop camper's exterior can also support an array of add-ons. One of them is an awning and another is a bathroom annex. Others include gas tanks and mounts, storage boxes, and, my favorite, roof rails. The latter is essential for those of us planning e-bike rides in the middle of nowhere and kayak rides on lakes.

After a long day exploring, you'll come back to a camper that's been working its magic, soaking up energy from the sun, keeping your foods cool and fresh, and waiting for you with an interior that's sure to give you the night's rest you've been looking for. Take your shoes and muddy clothes off, climb inside, turn on your reading lights or the sound system, and have a good night. If the local wildlife isn't dangerous, sleep with the side doors open and a cool breeze flowing through the cabin.
