PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey endorsed both former President Donald Trump and former television news anchor Kari Lake in the upcoming presidential and Senate race.
“Much is on the line this election year & I’m encouraging all eligible Arizonans to vote & prioritize the issues that most affect our state & nation. I will be voting for Republicans up & down the ballot in November — and both Donald Trump and Kari Lake have my endorsement…,” said Ducey. “Differences aside, there is too much on the line and only a Republican in the White House and a majority in the House and U.S. Senate can ensure it.”
The new endorsements come days after a particularly political week in Arizona that included visits from Vice President Kamala Harris and counterprogramming from the Republicans with a joint Trump-Lake event.
A recent HighGround poll showed Harris and Gallego doing slightly better with the opposition than Trump and Lake.
It’s a stark contrast from the end of Ducey’s gubernatorial career, where he famously silenced a call from then-President Trump as the governor certified the 2020 election in Arizona for Democrat Joe Biden. At the time, Trump called Ducey “one of the worst governors in America.”
When it came to addressing election denialism, he said that some people had been misled, and others just needed to be reminded of the facts.
“Sometimes you need a ‘clean up on aisle nine’ to focus the mind,” he said about the claims of a stolen election. “… I do think the candidates that you saw focusing on the future, rather than looking in the rearview mirror and talking about the past, were the ones that had great success.”
In 2022, Ducey endorsed Karrin Taylor Robson, who challenged Lake in the gubernatorial race. Lake ultimately won the GOP Primary that year but lost to current Gov. Katie Hobbs.
The former Republican governor has also been in the spotlight as the race to the White House heats up and with all eyes on Arizona’s pivotal 11 electoral votes.
In an interview with the New York Post, he criticized President Joe Biden and VP Harris.
“I served alongside three presidents: Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. Joe Biden was by far the worst on the border,” he told the Post’s Cameron Arcand.
He told the outlet that Harris’ failure to visit the border and the lack of “attention to the border” is something Harris “will have to answer for in this presidential campaign.”
