What does he say to those who are trying to enter the US to help their families, without the advantages of his French-born wife? And how does that match with his avowed status as a Christian?
“The majority of individuals we see crossing right now are military-aged men, and we have other countries admitting they’ve emptied their jails.”
“We have to look for the greater good of the United States. I feel bad, and I have empathy for the family in Guatemala that wants to come here,” he said.
“[But] we can’t stop the criminals from entering, and so we have to come up with a solution.”
Teeple worked in the US navy and the prison service before joining the sheriff’s department in Pinal County 17 years ago. It is located about 40 miles south of Phoenix and is made of tough and rugged terrain.
He married his wife, Corinne, who is 56, more than 30 years ago. She works as the chief international steward for a major airline and travels the globe for her work.
Teeple says his ideas about freedom, faith and family would in practice mean largely leaving people alone to go about their business.
“Forget about political affiliation – Republican, Libertarian, or Democrat. I think everyone in Pinal County wants to be a member of the ‘leave me alone party’,” he said.
“That is the way we’re operating now. If you’re not doing anything wrong. Or if you don’t need help, we should leave you alone. If you do need help, and you call us, we will give you that help…That’s how we protect your individual liberties.”
Teeple’s challenger to be sheriff is Democrat Patrick Melvin, a police veteran who has previously served as deputy chief of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in Phoenix – the fourth largest department in the country. Local media reports that he was hired in Port Arthur Texas in 2018, yet was asked for his resignation two years later.
Melvin, 59, and the Pinal County Democratic Party did not respond to inquiries from i. Melvin has previously said he wants to “remove the politics” and called for an audit of the department’s finances.
“Fiscal responsibility is very important, and that’s why, on day one, I want to do an audit from top to bottom of the sheriff’s office,” he said in one campaign video posted online.
In another he says his “number one goal is for you to be safe and secure and comfortable in your neighbourhoods and your communities”.

The search for a new sheriff comes after outgoing Pinal County sheriff Mark Lamb ran for the US Senate but lost in the Republican primary to Trump-loyalist Kari Lake. He was accused of breaking state law by criminal justice experts by spending more than $200,000 on guns and ammunition from a fund intended to be used for incarcerated people.
Lamb told a public hearing the weapons were needed to protect inmates and staff and denied doing anything wrong, according to local media.
“We have the responsibility of transporting inmates throughout this state to different courts, to the hospitals, to a lot of different places,” Mr Lamb said. “We are tasked with ensuring the welfare and the safety of not just those inmates, also our staff and the public, who may or may not come in contact with these inmates.”

No polls have bene commissioned for the sheriff’s race, but Pinal County is known to be solidly red. In 2020, Trump beat Biden here by a 60-40 margin, even though the Democrat won the state by just a few thousand votes.
How does Teeple rate his chances? He says he was advised to run as if he was “ten points behind” and recalls how he used to box in the navy wearing headgear.
“When you’re wearing headgear, you’re not going for the knock-out,” he said.
“You’re trying to hit as many points as possible. And neither one knows who won until they read the scorecard at the end. That’s the way I’ve looked at this race.”
